In an era marked by rapid advancements in healthcare technology, the landscape is witnessing a paradigm shift towards personalised and preventive healthcare solutions. Our client, a leading healthcare innovator based in the UK had a vision to transcend traditional models, aimed at empowering individuals and medical professionals alike through cutting-edge epigenetic testing.

Epigenetics, with its profound implications for health and wellness, offers a transformative approach to understanding individual health profiles. The client’s holistic suite of healthcare solutions encompassed a diverse array of services tailored to cater to individual needs. This included personalised brain training for cognitive enhancement to home blood tests for direct healthcare diagnostics. Central to this initiative was a relentless focus on personalised genetic insights, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health journey at every stage of life.

Our client wanted to broaden the access to comprehensive genetic and epigenetic insights. Their goal was to go beyond the conventional transactional model associated with genetic testing, ensuring that users receive holistic DNA health results with ease.

Roadblocks to the transition

While navigating through the complex landscape of epigenetic data the client faced challenges in delivering accurate and timely results directly to end-users. These included –

  • The absence of a medium for result-sharing prompted the need for an innovative mobile application and e-commerce platform
  • Integration with third-party AI technologies and continuous library updates 
  • The system needed to meticulously track specific product IDs and correlate them with the corresponding purchasers
  • Delivering accurate results and establishing a seamless connection between the purchased product and the individual user.

In the domain of health-related products, precision and accuracy are paramount. Any lapses in tracking and associating product IDs with users could lead to misinformation or, worse, the delivery of results to the wrong individuals. A fail-proof integration was essential to ensure the trustworthiness of the entire process, safeguarding the integrity of the health-related insights provided to users. Imagine a healthcare experience where accuracy meets confidentiality, instilling unwavering trust in the solutions you rely on for your well-being. At the heart of our client’s mission lies this very commitment: to not only deliver precise results but also safeguard the confidentiality of each individual’s health journey.

Crafting a seamless healthcare platform

We conducted in-depth interviews, workshops, and analyses of existing systems to gain a holistic understanding of the project scope. The client’s need for a direct result-sharing medium, incorporating AI functionalities, and developing a web-based portal for diverse stakeholders became focal points. By delving into various intricacies and activity tracking, we gained a proper understanding of the system’s comprehensive functionality. Our team crafted a comprehensive end-to-end solution for our client, encompassing both a mobile application and an e-commerce store, to address their multifaceted needs in the healthcare domain.

The mobile application, available on the two predominant platforms, Android and iOS, serves as a user-friendly interface for presenting DNA and epigenetic results. The app facilitates the delivery of complex genetic insights to users in an easily comprehensible format. This strategic approach ensures that users can seamlessly interpret and act upon their health data regardless of their familiarity with genetic terminology.

To enhance accessibility, the app is not limited by language barriers. Currently supporting four languages – English, German, Dutch, and Lithuanian – the Android and iOS apps are designed with scalability in mind. The architecture allows for the addition of new languages without necessitating major code changes, reflecting a commitment to global reach and inclusivity.

Complementing the mobile app, the e-commerce store was established using WooCommerce, integrated with WordPress. This setup serves as a pivotal platform for users to initiate purchases of genetic testing kits. The integration extends further to include third-party partners through customised roles-based protected APIs. The Superadmin portal acts as a centralised hub, providing administrative access to modify and interpret user data across diverse partners, including the crucial interpretation of Kit IDs.

The integration of AI functionalities for face age determination and a system to calculate brain health added to the complexity of the requirements. The incorporation of AI functionalities and the creation of a web-based portal were seamlessly integrated into subsequent iterations, ensuring that the evolving requirements were met in a structured and adaptable manner.

Impacting healthcare and market execution

    • Genetic Insight Generative Algorithm

In the process of extracting comprehensive insights from DNA reports, we understood the layers of intricacies it possessed. Therefore we decided to focus on the development of a robust algorithm. Recognising the pivotal role algorithms play in deriving meaningful genetic insights and making sure they are effectively delivered to the end user by tracking the correct Kit ID and the User ID, we engaged in close collaboration with clinical researchers and scientists. Working hand in hand with these experts, our primary objective was to craft a Genetic Insights Generation Algorithm, laying the foundation for our entire solution. This algorithm plays a crucial role in interpreting complex genetic data, ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of this solution.

    • Personalised User Experience

The app dynamically adapts to users’ health goals, ensuring a personalised experience. From personalized reports to actionable recommendations, and workout and nutrition planners, the app evolves with the user’s changing health objectives. 

    • Accelerated go-to-market capabilities

Emvigo has been supporting the organisation’s Go-to-Market strategy, to facilitate seamless market entry by taking features and capabilities to production at speed and scale. Utilising a streamlined process and operating model has enabled us to turn around developments in less than two weeks, showcasing a distinctive strength in velocity and execution.

Future growth initiatives

Currently, Emvigo has four white-label developments underway, aimed at delivering customised solutions for various partners. The evolution of DNA 12 is in progress, featuring more than 24 modes, expanding beyond genetics to offer comprehensive health insights. This ensures more personalised healthcare is available for everyone. This also comes with two additional modes in the pipeline, promising expanded functionalities. A noteworthy upgrade is in the works for the Library API, advancing the technological infrastructure of the Android application to level 33. Plans encompass the pipeline development of API level 34, ensuring that the mobile application remains at the forefront of technological advancements.
