225,000 Meters, Manual Tracking. £37.5M in Funding Unlocked After Emvigo Rebuilt the Entire System.
Project Overview
Every Untracked Meter Was a Revenue Leak. Emvigo Sealed It.
A prominent UK energy sector business, managing a portfolio of over 225,000 smart meters across collaborations with more than 20 energy retailers, had built genuine market scale without the infrastructure to sustain it.
Asset tracking was manual. Triage and repatriation were fragmented. There was no real-time visibility into meter status across the full lifecycle – from purchase through installation, uninstallation, and return. The operational cost of that gap was measurable in man-days, data inaccuracies, and missed commercial opportunities.
Emvigo designed and delivered a comprehensive web and mobile asset management platform. This covered the full smart meter lifecycle, from portfolio management and real-time tracking to triage decision-making and financial reporting.

The Challenge
An Asset Portfolio Too Large to Run on Spreadsheets and Manual Processes
At 225,000 meters under management across 20+ energy retailers, the client’s operational model had outgrown the processes holding it together. Manual tracking wasn’t just slow. It was introducing inaccuracies that had direct financial and regulatory consequences in a sector where data integrity is non-negotiable.
Customer Perspective
- Energy retailers and triage partners had no unified view of meter ownership, installation status, or repatriation progress across the supply chain
- Identifying the correct asset owner during repatriation required manual investigation, slowing returns and creating invoicing errors when ownership had changed
- Field operators managing triage and repatriation had no mobile tooling
- Decisions about asset reusability or decommissioning were made without structured data capture or photographic documentation
- Suppliers had no self-service mechanism to upload portfolios, validate invoices, or track their own assets within the shared ecosystem
Business & Operational Problems
- Tracking installations and uninstallations was taking four man-days per cycle, an operational overhead that was scaling with every new retailer added
- Fragmented data sources with no centralised platform meant asset status, ownership records, and financial reporting were all maintained separately with no single source of truth
- The absence of real-time tracking made large data exports and rapid searches practically impossible
- Decisions were being made on information that was already outdated
- Multi-company collaboration across triage partners, asset owners, and suppliers required role-based access and structured data separation that the existing system had no capacity to deliver
Managing a large asset portfolio across multiple partners with no unified platform holding it together?
Emvigo builds asset management infrastructure for the scale and data complexity that the energy sector actually operates at.
Product Strategy
Emvigo's Strategic Role: Full Lifecycle Architecture Across Web and Mobile
The central strategic decision was to treat the entire asset lifecycle from purchase, installation, triage, repatriation, disposal, as a single continuous data flow rather than a set of disconnected operational processes. Every module was built to feed that shared record, giving every user type – from super admin to field operator to external supplier – a role-appropriate window into the same live system.
A dedicated mobile application for field operators was treated as a first-class delivery requirement, recognising that the most critical data capture happened away from a desk, in the field, at the point of triage.
In asset management at this scale, the data is only as good as the moment it’s captured. Get the mobile experience right and the entire reporting chain improves with it.

01
Single Source of Truth Across the Full Asset Lifecycle
Every meter event recorded in one unified system accessible to all authorised parties in real time.
02
Mobile-First Field Operations
A purpose-built mobile application giving triage and repatriation operators structured data capture, barcode scanning, and photographic documentation at the point of asset handling.
03
Role-Based Multi-Organisation Architecture
Tiered access across super users, triage partners, asset owners, and suppliers, each with appropriate visibility and controls without compromising data separation between organisations.
04
Automated Financial Reporting and Invoicing
Installation, uninstallation, and COS data feeding directly into financial reports and invoices, eliminating the manual reconciliation.
05
Real-Time Search and Large-Scale Data Export
Elasticsearch and OpenSearch integration enabling rapid asset searches and large data exports within minutes, replacing processes that had previously taken days.
Our Solution
Field Operators. Energy Retailers. Triage Partners. One System That Finally Connected All of Them.
Emvigo delivered an integrated web and mobile smart meter asset management platform, giving every stakeholder in the supply chain real-time visibility of the assets they owned, managed, or serviced.
Asset Portfolio Management
A master asset register covering all energy and gas meters. Bulk upload capability, serial number search, full event history per asset, and real-time status tracking from purchase through to disposal.
Repatriation and Triage Module
A web and mobile workflow enabling triage teams to identify asset owners instantly, record the full triage process with photographic evidence, and make structured decisions on asset reusability or decommissioning.
Installed Assets Financial Tracking
Automated tracking of installed asset data feeding directly into financial reports and invoice generation, reducing the four-man-day reporting cycle to under two hours.
COS Loss and Gain Reporting
A dedicated module tracking supplier losses and gains associated with meter changes, providing accurate, auditable COS data for billing reconciliation across all energy retailer relationships.

Mobile Field Application
A purpose-built Android application enabling field operators to accept jobs, scan assets, capture images, submit triage data, and complete repatriation workflows, without dependency on desktop access.
Supplier Self-Service Portal
An external supplier module enabling portfolio uploads, asset history searches, invoice validation against rental data, and map rental management. This brought suppliers into the platform ecosystem without exposing internal operational data.
