Smart Meter Installation Doesn't Stop When the Network Does
A UK energy technology provider supporting smart meter installations needed field engineers to execute jobs reliably across properties where mobile connectivity could be poor or unavailable. The platform also had to track regulated assets throughout their lifecycle and coordinate commissioning across multiple DCC adapters.
The challenge extended beyond connectivity. Jobs involved dynamic worksheets, complex asset states, barcode and Bluetooth scanning, conditional business rules, and strict requirements around saving job data before completion. Office teams also needed visibility into jobs, engineers, vans, assets, and outcomes without relying on manual refreshes.
Emvigo came in as a development and QA partner, delivering a two-part field-service ecosystem: an Android mobile application for engineers and a Django-based web portal for administrators. The result was a resilient, offline-first platform built around real field conditions.

Smart meter installation combines physical fieldwork with regulated asset management, complex commissioning workflows and backend dependencies. The platform needed to remain reliable across unreliable networks, multiple Android devices, and several operational edge cases.

Emvigo approached the platform around the conditions engineers actually face: unreliable connectivity, device constraints, asset-scanning requirements and jobs that cannot simply be restarted when something goes wrong.
The architecture separated field execution from administrative control while keeping both connected through synchronisation, notifications, and shared operational data. An offline-first approach allowed work to continue locally, with queued data synchronising when connectivity returned.
