Sustainability · Case Study

Every Dinner. Every Meeting. Every Transaction. A Sustainability Platform That Turned Them All Into Trees.

The promise was compelling. The pipeline behind it was entirely manual, entirely fragile, and entirely unverifiable. That was the real problem to solve.

Project Overview

The Environmental Impact Was Real. The Infrastructure Proving It, Wasn't.

A UK-based sustainability initiative was doing something genuinely compelling. It was embedding tree planting into everyday acts like dining out and scheduling business meetings. The mission was clear. The operational reality behind it was not.

Four disconnected sub-platforms. A manual restaurant onboarding process. POS integrations that broke with every vendor update. And critically, no automated pipeline connecting a UK diner’s contribution to a verified, allocated tree in Africa. The donation loop was open at both ends.

Emvigo stepped in as product and technology partner, building a unified four-module sustainability ecosystem on a single backend. We automated everything from restaurant transactions to African tree allocation. This was giving every partner verifiable, real-time proof of their environmental impact.

The Challenge

A Sustainability Brand Whose Impact Couldn't Be Verified End-to-End

The platform’s ambition was to turn routine transactions into environmental actions. But without an automated pipeline connecting the UK side to the Africa side, the brand was making a promise its infrastructure couldn’t fully keep.

Customer Perspective

Business & Operational Problems

Building a sustainability platform where automation, third-party integration, and verifiable impact all have to work together across continents?

Emvigo builds the infrastructure that turns environmental promises into auditable, scalable outcomes.

Product Strategy

Emvigo's Strategic Role: Evolving a Live Platform Without Breaking What Already Works

The strategic decision that shaped everything else was to enhance rather than replace. The existing platform carried institutional knowledge and live partner relationships. Wholesale rebuilding would have introduced migration risk and disrupted operations that were already delivering real environmental impact.

Emvigo layered new automation engines, API infrastructure, and tracking modules around the existing core. We progressively modernised the platform while keeping live partner operations running throughout. The result was a controlled transformation rather than a risky replacement.

The pipeline from a UK dinner bill to an African tree needed to be fully automated before it could be trusted. Automation isn’t an efficiency play here; we understood it’s a credibility one.

01

Automate the Entire Donation-to-Tree Pipeline

Every stage, like transaction, invoicing, tree creation, allocation, certification, was automated end-to-end, removing the manual intervention that had made the pipeline fragile and unscalable.

02

API-First POS Connectivity

Restaurant integrations were built as continuously maintained API connections and not one-off builds. This ensured live data flow survived every POS vendor update across all three systems.

03

Unified Backend Across Four Sub-Platforms

A single master system orchestrating Carbon Friendly Dining, Panacea, Master Portal, and Tree Planting, sharing data, logic, and reporting without duplicating infrastructure.

04

Impact as a Verifiable, Embeddable Asset

Real-time tree counters and certificates are auto-generated per partner, turning environmental impact from a claim into a live, embeddable proof point for every restaurant and business in the network.

05

Evolve Without Disrupting Live Operations

New modules were introduced incrementally alongside existing infrastructure, preserving operational continuity for live partners throughout the entire modernisation process.

Our Solution

From a UK Dinner Bill to an African Forest - Fully Automated, Fully Verified.

Emvigo built four connected modules on one unified sustainability backend. This closes the full loop from UK restaurant transactions to African tree allocation. It provides real-time proof of impact at every stage.

Carbon Friendly Dining (CFD)

A consumer-facing web platform lets diners plant a tree by adding about £1 to their restaurant bill. The full process is automated from that single payment trigger. It handles invoicing, tree allocation, and certification.

Operations and POS Integration Layer

The operational backbone coordinating incoming POS data from EPOS Now, Tevalis, and Lightspeed with the Trees allocation engine. This abstracts multi-POS complexity away from the business team and maintained continuously as vendor APIs evolve.

Master Portal - Centralised Admin Hub

A single Vue.js and Nuxt.js administration interface giving the team full control over partner management, TPO invoice processing, tree creation, allocation reporting, and cross-entity oversight across all markets and platforms.

Consumer and Corporate Platform

A serverless, high-performance React.js and Next.js platform for tree gifting at scale, enabling businesses and individuals to gift trees, embed live counters on their websites, and generate branded certificates for CSR programmes and corporate campaigns.

African TPO Sync Pipeline

When African Tree Planting Organisations invoice for planted trees, Emvigo's system automatically creates those trees in the database and allocates them to individual customer transactions.

Embeddable Impact Widgets and Certificates

Auto-generated, per-partner tree counters and certificates embeddable on any restaurant or corporate website, updating in real time as trees are planted. This provides partners with live, verifiable proof of their environmental contribution.

5.2 Million Trees Planted and Verified

The automated TPO sync pipeline closed the loop that manual processes had left open. Every tree is traceable by species, geo-coded location, and lifecycle status across 21 species and 5 active planting projects.

64+ Live POS Integrations Maintained

Real-time transaction data flowing from UK restaurants into the tree-planting pipeline. Integrations are continuously maintained as POS vendors update their APIs, keeping the entire network live without manual intervention.

Manual Certification Processes Fully Eliminated

Auto-generated certificates and embeddable live counters replaced a manual, per-partner provisioning process. Every partner gets instant, credible proof of their environmental impact without operational overhead.

Businesses Engaged Through Automated Workflows

Partner onboarding and ongoing engagement are handled through API-driven automation, enabling the network to scale without manual intervention.
